Amphibious mudskipper populations are genetically connected along coastlines, but differentiated across water

چکیده

Aim Specialized life histories can restrict the way that organisms move through landscape. Some fishes, such as mudskippers in family Gobiidae, are obligately amphibious and require a terrestrial phase which adults build burrows lay eggs mudflats. To evaluate whether this restricted, out-of-water might influence population structure one mudskipper, we tested populations separated by water more differentiated than those connected along coastline. Location South East China Seas. Taxon Periophthalmus modestus (family: subfamily: Oxudercinae) (Cantor 1842). Methods We collected 236 individuals from 10 locations around used targeted capture sequencing method, RADcap, to call SNPs 365 loci. multiple spatial genetics analyses coalescent models address contemporary historic biogeography of species. Results The observed levels genetic variation show P. across large distances continuous coastline small spans water. Restricted long-distance dispersal deep has resulted fragmentation populations. recovered no signal isolation distance, but instead, found differentiation associated with regional groupings expanses Main conclusions A limited significantly affects fish. restrictive history may be key factor present-day distribution modestus. Neurohypophysial Hormones Regulate Amphibious Behaviour in the Mudskipper Goby

The neurohypophysial hormones, arginine vasotocin and isotocin, regulate both hydromineral balance and social behaviors in fish. In the amphibious mudskipper, Periophthalmus modestus, we previously found arginine-vasotocin-specific regulation of aggressive behavior, including migration of the submissive subordinate into water. This migration also implies the need for adaptation to dehydration. ...

Sympatric, temporally isolated populations of the pine white butterfly Neophasia menapia, are morphologically and genetically differentiated

Temporal isolation remains an understudied, and potentially under-appreciated, mechanism of reproductive isolation. Phenological differences have been discovered in populations of the pine white butterfly (Neophasia menapia), a typically univoltine species found throughout western North America. At two locations in the Coast Range of California there are two periods of adult emergence per year,...

Variants associated with common disease are not unusually differentiated in frequency across populations.

Genetic variants that contribute to risk of common disease may differ in frequency across populations more than random variants in the genome do, perhaps because they have been exposed to population-specific natural selection. To assess this hypothesis empirically, we analyzed data from two groups of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that have shown reproducible (n = 9) or reported (n = 39...

Mudskipper genomes provide insights into the terrestrial adaptation of amphibious fishes

Mudskippers are amphibious fishes that have developed morphological and physiological adaptations to match their unique lifestyles. Here we perform whole-genome sequencing of four representative mudskippers to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations. We discover an expansion of innate immune system genes in the mudskippers that may provide defence against terrestrial pat...

Spaces That Are Connected but Not Path-connected

A topological space X is called connected if it’s impossible to write X as a union of two nonempty disjoint open subsets: if X = U ∪ V where U and V are open subsets of X and U ∩ V = ∅ then one of U or V is empty. Intuitively, this means X consists of one piece. A subset of a topological space is called connected if it is connected in the subspace topology. The most fundamental example of a con...
